PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Strategies for Independence and Social Understanding

Research shows that students with autism significantly benefit from evidence-based strategies such as visual picture cards, visual schedules, and conversation templates. This comprehensive download contains multiple strategies to support students with autism throughout their day. These strategies equip a teacher or parent to help keep the child’s day predictable while also providing tools for problem-solving, self-monitoring and social understanding.

Includes the following:

Visual picture cards (27 total plus blanks): Simple, these cards appeal to students across ages, ethnicities, and gender. Address daily schedule items as well as cues for social understanding. Suggestion: Cut out, laminate (with backing for strength), and attach to a lanyard to be worn around your neck.

First-Then Sheets: To break down the day into manageable tasks, children with autism often need to see the demand in terms of a school task followed by a preferred task (e.g., First: Finish math problems #1-4. Then: 10 minutes of listening to my music). Various sizes and formats to choose from.

Conversation Templates: Use these conversation templates to improve clarity and understanding of the thoughts, feelings, and words of others. The templates use talk bubbles and thought bubbles so the staff member or parent can show the perspectives of each person regarding a given situation. The templates can also be used in a proactive manner to teach conversation skills and help students understand the process of thinking and saying.

Daily and Mini-Schedules: Use these daily schedules to increase predictability for your students. Often students with autism need their own daily schedule even though there is already one posted in front of the class. The mini-schedule breaks the day down further, helping present a task (assignment) into manageable steps that the student can check off as he/she goes. Use at home or school.

Problem-Solving and Self-Monitoring sheets: Use the self-monitoring sheet to increase awareness and growth of target behaviors. For example, the goal may be to ask for help when stuck. For each part of the student’s day (schedule), the student or adult circles whether or not the student asked for help. Rewards may be used if helpful. At the bottom, list the supports that help the student follow through with the desired behavior. Use the problem-solving sheet to debrief after an incident occurs with your student. This walks the student through the process of reflection, calming and learning in order to return to his/her schedule and gain skills for handling similar situations in the future.
