This lesson was designed for a bilingual Spanish speaking class. I was their ESL (English) teacher. Most of the students spoke little to no English, and were reluctant to do so. This is one of those activities that held their interest because of the scaffolding, and of course the subject matter: themselves!
Included in this package:
*The lesson plan (which focuses on adjectives)
*A handout for students with line by line guidelines on what to include in each line of the poem and a rubric
*An example poem that I wrote about myself, decorated with images relating to the poem.
For my students, this lesson was part of a mini-unit, this particular lesson focusing on adjectives students can use to describe themselves. For more advanced classes, this poem could be completed in one or two class sessions.
The lesson uses the workshop model and has a checkbox for the teacher to circle which standards they are using in the lesson. While it lists ESL standards and was used in a classroom with ESL students, this lesson is appropriate for any English class.
