This Autobiography Writing Project is designed to be an extended writing activity that allows students to reflect on and share impactful moments from throughout their lives. Students will compose a series of personal narratives throughout the duration of a semester or course and a component of the final project will be to create a book, their autobiography.
All materials are sold as Microsoft Word files so that teachers can customize prompts and specific requirements as necessary. My students have created their autobiography books using different apps on their iPads, but this assignment can be created using whatever word processing resources you have available at your school. If your budget allows, I generally print students' autobiographies in full color and provide them with a bound copy on our last day of class. For me, this project acts as a final writing portfolio, and I include a handwritten note to each student at the back of their book.
This product includes the following:
-Introduction/ Cover Page Assignment Explanations (This includes the link to a video that I created. Generally this assignment is completed last and asks students to reflect on how all of the events they've selected have impacted their lives. This will become the intro/forward to their books.)
-8 Writing Prompts, which will be the 8 chapters of the book. As the prompts are currently written, they are tied to some of the different pieces of literature that we read throughout the course. After each short story or poem that we read in class, students complete some type of narrative writing assignment that will eventually be included in their autobiographies at the end of the semester. Each topic is broad (ex. perseverance and/or determination) and can be related to a reading assignment or not.
-Favorites/Least Favorites Assignment (This is short and just for fun. Students include some of their favorite and least favorite things from different categories.)
-Final Checklist Requirements/Grade Sheet (Since this project is designed to be completed over an extended period of time with each narrative writing assignment completed a few weeks apart, this final checklist helps students to pull all of their work back together as they compile their books. These requirements include some overall requirements such as page numbers, a table of contents, pictures, etc.)
