Creating the automated analytic rubric
Each row of the grading rubric contains a criteria and a weighting or maximum mark. And the columns contain the grading levels with the corresponding mark or percentage ranges. If you want you can then add performance descriptors into the cells. Because the Automated Analytic Rubric software works in Word for Windows or Macintosh you can format the table as you want using shading, borders, graphics, hyperlinks and you don’t need to learn a new piece of software. How good is that?
Completing the rubric
The Automated Analytic Rubric software also saves you time completing the grading rubric. Clicking a performance descriptor in a cell and then pressing the F6 function key highlights the cell and calculates the weighted mark for that criterion. For example, if you assessed the ABSTRACT as a C grade (70% to 79%) and the maximum mark is 10, the student is awarded 7.5 marks. The Automated Analytic Rubric software automatically highlights the cell and inserts the grade and rescaled mark. Pressing F5 will vary the grade down to C- and F7 will varies it up through C+ to B- and beyond. You can quickly complete the rubric by clicking the relevant cell and pressing F6 or F5 or F7. If you want you can also add bonus points or subtract penalties e.g. -5 as the assignment was late. When you have finished, pressing the F8 key totals the marks for all criteria and converts the total to a percentage, weighted mark, and grade. If you vary an assessment, you will see the updated total and grade. You can then easily copy the completed rubric to return to the student.
