These informational reading selections about Autumn include bunches of interesting facts. I created each of these original themed selections (9 in all) based on the specific Common Core needs of 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Each selection is two pages long and includes a two-page worksheet with complete answer key.

Sample: Hibernation

In the fall, hibernating animals spend a lot of time getting their winter home ready for cold weather. They settle into their home such as a den, burrow, cave or a hollow log. These homes protect the animal and give them shelter from the cold winter temperatures.

Some animals are true hibernators – this means their body temperature drops and it breathes very slowly. This helps the animal save energy. You can’t wake these critters up.

Other animals are not true hibernators because they wake up to eat or go to the bathroom. Squirrels do not hibernate, but they do sleep a lot in the winter. They wake up every few days to eat hidden nuts. Bears are not true hibernators because their body temperature stays warm and a bear can wake up but they don’t go outside of their den.

Standards-based reading fun

Common Core State Standards include an updated focus on reading informational texts. These selections and worksheets fit perfectly with the standards below. I have included are multiple-choice, short answer and some extended response items.
The reading packet includes selections on:

- Tree Squirrels
- Fall Sports
- Hibernation
- Leaves
- Moon Names
- Veterans Day
- Turkeys
- Facts about Thanksgiving
- Thanksgiving Day Games

Have some fall fun with your kids!
