This is one of my all-time most favorite lessons. It is a great beginning the year activity, but it can be used any time of year. See the entire writing lesson by downloading the preview. The Fall of Freddie the Leaf is a beautifully written story about a leaf named Freddie. Freddie and his friends (companion leaves) share the passing of the seasons - spring, summer, fall, and finally winter. This story teaches children about the circle of life, and the fragile balance between life and death.
This student writing is especially meaningful when it is combined with plant study. Students are able to integrate their science knowledge with the questions presented in this narrative writing.
The student writing resulting from this project are beautiful and emotionally moving. You will understand your children in a deeper, more meaningful way.
