Years ago I learned this poem and activity from Jay Broeker. Over the years it has transformed from a movement activity to a full-on mini-performance and art project and I absolutely love the work my students produce and they enjoy the process very much.
I primarily do this activity with my 1st graders and introduce the poem to my kindergartners as a non-locomotor movement activity. They get so excited when we come back to it in first grade when they get to add the instruments and do the art project. Sometimes as an extension I bring this activity back in 2nd grade and my students sort the different leaf colors by rhythm.
Notes are provided in the PowerPoint on directions I give my students and suggestions of movements and instruments, but be creative and make it your own!
Also included in this resource is the worksheet I use with my students to organize their different color leaves before making their patterns on their posters. The worksheet can also be colored for the fast finishers.
Please reach out with any questions you may have about this activity
