Teacher’s Guide:

• What I like to do is to divide vocabulary into 2 categories: Important and not as important.

• The reason I do this is because for most units in the Avancemos curriculum, there are around 50 vocabulary words for students to learn.

• For the block schedule, this leaves around a week at most for students to get the words and learn them before the quiz.

• When this happens, I find that students are not retaining as many of the words because they had to learn so many in such a short amount of time.

• So, what I do for each unit is: I take half of the words from that unit and require the students to learn them in Spanish. I call these “must know” words, because they must know them from English to Spanish.

• The other half, I call recognizable words. Students must be able to recognize the words from Spanish and write down the English.

• On each quiz, there are BOTH must know and recognizable words.

• This keeps the students accountable for all the words in the unit.

• There are usually more must know words on the quiz than recognizable.

• We practice both sets in class, but the students are aware which words they have to know in Spanish and which ones they have to recognize in English.

• I stress the format of the quiz over and over, especially when students are given the first quiz.

• I tell them to look at the format and that is how all of the quizzes are formatted, the only change being the amount of questions, based on the amount of vocabulary for that unit.

• Additionally, I have provided a place on the “must know” sheet for the quiz date.

• At the beginning of each unit, students use their textbooks to fill in the definitions.

• At the bottom of the sheet, it reminds students that they will also have several recognizable words on the quiz.

• In class, we highlight accent marks, special letters (ñ), and characters (¡¿).

• Many students ask me why when we have vocabulary lists, do they write the English instead of the Spanish, when it is the other way around?

• Simple: 9 times out of 10, there are at least 2-3 students who misspell vocabulary words and phrases or forget accent marks, thus LEARNING them wrong. I find if they have to fill in the English, there is NO WAY to misspell the Spanish because it is already printed for them.

• They just have to read the directions on which words they have to know which way.

• I have also included an answer key with the words, as some teachers may want to have a different format to distribute to students.
