The first half of the 20th century gave rise to a series of artistic movements and styles in Europe, especially in painting, known as avant-garde. This mini-unit deals with the main ideas of all these avant-garde movement: fauvism, expressionism, cubism and futurism, and the most relevant painters, Matisse, Kirchner, Kandiski, Boccioni, Picasso and Juan Gris.

The minilesson includes relevant and straightforward information about avant-garde movements (two pages), five written and speaking activities (answers included), a final online project and the teachers' notes.
