Average atomic mass is a simple concept and finding the average atomic mass of M&Mium (using varieties of M&Ms) is a common lab. I have done this for years in class, with finding M&Mium both as an introduction to the concept and as an activity after the lesson. In both cases, there are students who just follow the "cookbook" lab, fill in the required data, and still have no idea what the actual point of the activity was and how it related to average atomic mass.

This guided lab/lesson introduction allows students to work at their own pace to (1) learn what a weighted average is, (2) learn what average atomic mass is, (3) practice some math problems, and (4) use what they've learned to calculate the average mass of M&Mium with guided steps rather than cookbook steps.
