The Awesome Classroom Design Project
(Art-integrated math project - Math concepts designed specifically for 3rd-5th, but is definitely a project that can could benefit 6th-8th as well)

"Scenario: Today is your lucky day! You just found out that you have
been chosen to help design your teacher’s new classroom! She/he is trusting in your awesome design and budgeting skills to get the job done! The classroom can be arranged however you’d like it, but must be functional (which means it must be a space to be used for learning) and an enjoyable place to be in (so the students like it too).
You have been given a budget of $750 which you CANNOT go over!
You must create a design that fits in the floorplan on the following page and has enough seating for at least 24 students and 1 teacher.
What things are important in your awesomely designed classroom? :)
Be sure to record your supply purchases on your supply order form,
and drawn in the items you’ve purchased on the floorplan grid."

Once students have completed "ordering" supplies/furniture for their classroom from the included catalog, they must arrange their purchases (which have specific sizes) onto the 1cm grid floorplan provided.
Afterwards, students will complete 2 worksheets which ask them questions based on their unique designs. Questions include finding the perimeter and area of specific items, converting measurements according to the floorplan ratio (1cm:2ft), writing fractions to describe the divided area, writing fractions to compare their spending to the total budget, comparing costs, multiplication, and solving fraction problems.
>>Rubric to assess classroom layout is included.
