CALVIN CAN'T FLY, THE STORY OF A BOOKWORM BIRDIE by Jennifer Berne

Calvin was part of a big family of starlings. He had many brothers and sisters and thousands and thousands of cousins. He looked like all of his relatives, but he was very different from them. They could fly, but Calvin could not. After he discovered books, Calvin could do something they could not do. Calvin learned to READ. He read letters, words, and sentences! In the library, his mind soared. At night, he dreamed of becoming a great writer. While Calvin read, the other starlings practiced flying. The other starlings would be ready for migration! They even called Calvin "nerdy birdie," "geeky beaky," and "BOOKWORM!"

What would happen to Calvin? Calvin Can't Fly, The Story of a Bookworm Birdie is the perfect book for starting school in in all grades! The cartoon illustrations by Keith Bendis are hysterical ... the starlings and their flying practices are a hoot! No library can be complete without it! It will become an instant favorite, inspiring kids and teachers to explore the importance of becoming a well-rounded reader!

MISS BROOKS LOVES BOOKS
Miss Brooks will do anything to get us read books. She has dressed as a long-eared bunny when she read a book about a rabbit, a grey elephant when she read Babar, and a big green caterpillar when she read The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I just never know what kind of strange creature Miss Brooks will become to encourage me to read a book. But it's not going to work! I won't fall for it. You see Miss Brooks loves books, but I don't.

During Book Week, Miss Brooks told to pick our favorite story and dress like someone or something in the story. She wanted us to show everyone why they loved the book. How could I pick my favorite? I didn't like any of them!
What do you think happens? Do you think Miss Brooks will win? Do you think I can hold out against all those books in the library?

Miss Brooks Loves Books (and I don't) by Barbara Bottner will inspire kids to find that favorite book and librarians to become the real-life literary characters to do the inspiring! The great illustrations on stark, uncluttered white background help readers focus on the emotions and humor of the story. It's a story that SHOULD look familiar to students who have a firecracker librarian-cheerleader and a love of books, as well to those reluctant readers among us!

Splat the Cat is worried about the first day of school.
Will he have any friends? Maybe he should take his pet mouse, Seymour.
That way he will be sure to have a friend.

All kinds of problems seem to try to keep him from going to school. The front door is stuck. The gate won't let go of his fingers. Things like lamp posts won't get out of his way. What will his teacher, Mrs. Wimpydimple say when she sees him?
What kinds of lessons will she teach? Will she mind if he asks WHY a lot?

Have you ever had those feelings? How did it turn out for you?

Splat has one big surprise on that day! Can you guess what it is?

Now, students and teachers gather in the fall to rebuild the school before learning can begin. Written by a Peace Corp volunteer, this book offers a sharp contrast to the fancy, air conditioned schools of America where our floors shine brightly, places we take for granted. Rain School takes readers to a whole new world.
