Why BAG? These 3 notes are often the first ones taught when students begin playing recorder. B is on the middle (or 3rd line), making it easy to locate. This makes located A and G ‘underneath’ B a logical next step. Several songs and simple melodies and be played and sung using these three notes (Hot Cross Buns, anyone?). The three letters spell an actual word, giving students the advantage of a mnemonic device. Many students are intimidated by having to learn ‘all the notes’ all at once. Limiting it to 3 notes helps build confidence and lays a firm foundation for future success. Beginning with 3 notes allows you to emphasize that the rhythmic value of a note does not affect it’s letter name or tone.
As a free bonus, I have included detailed links to Canadian and US curricular outcomes/standards.
