WELCOME TO CORE CITY!
Get ready to build functional language with non-verbal, minimally verbal, echolalic, and verbal students with Autism, language delay, or special needs!
Core vocabulary makes up about 80% of the words that we say and can be used in a variety of environments to communicate and respond quickly and effectively. Words such as greetings “hi” and “bye”, requests “want” and “more”, and responses “yes” and “no” are just some examples of these important concepts.
We have spent years developing a program that truly encourages the use of functional language throughout the day and pushes our "team" to go BEYOND REQUESTING.
***This year, we will be presenting our program within a 2-hour oral session at the ASHA Convention in Philadelphia!!!! "Let's Talk Autism: Learning Core Language Through Literacy". We are so excited to share what we have developed and our enthusiasm for teaching core language. Come check us out and make sure to say hello!!!***
This activity set targets one Core vocabulary word which can be used alone or as part of a complete Core word curriculum with all of our other sets!
The Complete Core Word Activity Set includes the following components for the target word "BATHROOM":
(We target the word "bathroom" near the beginning of the school year to get our teams in the routine of modeling the word and using visual supports EVERY time they take a child to the bathroom.)
*Editable Parent Introduction Letter: Welcome families to Core City, a place where functional language is all around us!
*Map and Map Key: This is an overview of the components of a complete Core word activity set. The team of educators, related service providers and families will understand how we are going to build this city together!
*Visual Supports: Picture symbols of each word can be placed all around the environment. You will be provided with the visuals to use as door signs and lanyard necklaces.
*Modified Core Communication Board: This board is modified to include only the target word in the same location as a full complete core 30 board. This aids in the development of motor planning and provides the foundation for the use of an expanded communication board.

Leveled Core Language Boards
*Chatter Book: These interactive books explain the different situations that each word can be used throughout the day. Children will practice the word multiple times throughout the book by placing a picture symbol on each page.
*Sensory Search Activity: Expose students to the target word again and again with a variety of stimulating activities.
*Writing: Children will be exposed to the target word again and again while working on their writing skills using 19 pages of leveled writing activities.
*Keyboard: Practice identifying letters and sounds, following directions, and typing on a keyboard that displays only the letters of the target word. Find each letter of the word in the correct sequence to spell the word. This board can be laminated or sent home to practice again and again!
*Data: Document student progress by using this thorough data sheet to monitor 8 levels of prompting.
*Home Carry-over Activities: Students will take a trip home in the CORE CAB! Parents will be provided with a variety of suggested activities to help work on each word in their own home.
*Adapted Literacy Component:
Work on the concept of the target word through repetitive exposure throughout a structured literacy activity using the book “The New Potty" by Gina and Mercer Mayer.
This includes a Color-coded Communication Board AND Visuals to Adapt Your Book. A second copy of the visuals can be printed to have students interact and match pictures while reading the book.
(This is a companion to the book. You will need to purchase the book separately.)
*Don't forget to use key strategies while teaching core language and developing AAC skills:
**Provide TIME for students to communicate! (it helps to count to 10 in your head) **RESPOND to spontaneous communication whenever it occurs!
**Provide AAC and VISUAL SUPPORTS for each activity!
**Use activities and materials that encourage ENGAGEMENT, INTERACTION and TURN-TAKING!
**Create COMMUNICATIVE OPPORTUNITIES throughout the day in as MANY situations as you can!
**MODEL those words!
