These CORE COMPETENCY "I Can" Statements REFLECTION strips, journal pages, and activities are based on Core Competencies in the New, Redesigned B.C. (British Columbia) Curriculum: “Building Student Success”

The wording has been ADAPTED by Miss Winning's Classroom to make it student-friendly for Primary level students and teachers - Grades 2 and 3 students, or Grades K and 1 students with more direct teacher assistance. (Due to the amount of reading involved, the teacher may want to read the info to the students and have them answer orally and do the colouring). It can also be used for older students with learning or reading challenges.

PLEASE NOTE: The B.C. Core Comeptency "Profiles" are NOT Grade Specific. They represent a whole range of skills from pre-K through upper intermediate. Therefore, profile 'one' is NOT directly connected to "Grade 1", etc. These profiles are intended to be used to help students to develop self-awareness/self-assessment skills, to do their own goal setting (with support as necessary), and to move through the different levels, each at their own rate.

• STUDENT-FRIENDLY WORDING of “I Can” Statements to describe skills in 6 competency areas:
 Positive Personal and Cultural Identity - "I am Happy to Be Me"
 Personal Awareness and Responsibility - "I Make Good Choices for Me"
 Social Responsibility - "I am Kind to Others and the Earth"
 Communication - "I Can Talk and Listen to Others, and Show My Thinking"
 Critical Thinking - "I Can Think, Ask Questions, and Solve Problems"
 Creative Thinking - "I Can Get New Ideas and Be Creative"
• Student Reflection Page – for reflecting and providing evidence of skill in different competency areas
• Instructions and Suggestions – for possible different ways to use the “I Can” Statements Sheets, Reflection Strips, and Student Reflection Page
• Cover pages to organize pre-cut reflection strips (instructions on page 1 of the other file)

Wording of "I Can" Statements is general enough to be used in both Public and Independent School settings, as well as Homeschool settings.
