Begin your year with FUN yet EDUCATIONAL STEM challenges.

PAPER CHAIN CHALLENGE: This STEM activity is fantastic for all ages. It is engaging and meaningful. In my classroom, I grouped students heterogeneously. Then I gave them the challenge to construct the longest paper chain out of just ONE piece of construction paper. After an initial time period for sketching ideas, each group constructed their paper chain. Upon completion, we measured the chains in inches two at a time, eliminating the shorter chain, until we were left with the "winner". After each measurement, we recorded the responses on the Data Log worksheet. We then took that information and created a graph. After that, we calculated the mean, median, mode and range of the set of class results. Finally, we reflected on our activity and our partnerships. SO MUCH FUN AND EDUCATIONAL TOO!!! ENJOY! Please rate if you get the chance! Thanks!

PAPER AIRPLANE CHALLENGE: Use the basic STEM principles when designing your own paper airplane. You could add to this activity by researching the four factors of flight and tried and true paper airplane designs before you begin. Then, have a class competition! I put my students in groups of 2-3. They come up with a group name. After they have developed their "winning" design, we go to an open space in the school and launch the competition. You will be surprised how many school personnel will come out of the woodwork and become part of the competition! After the competition, students use their math skills to graph the results and calculate the mean, median, mode and range of the set of final numbers. SO FUN!

SPAGHETTI MARSHMALLOW CHALLENGE: Don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity for your students to work collaboratively, problem-solve, show creativity and use their math skills! This Spaghetti Marshmallow Challenge cost me less than \$2.00 for all supplies but delivers such a big bang for the buck! Fun for students K-12 (they say that the kindergartners actually build the highest!). Enjoy!
