I recently read the BFG by Roald Dahl with my 5th graders. They absolutely loved it, and didn't even seem to realize I was sneaking in context clue practice!
The BFG uses a lot of nonsense words that the students loved. It seemed only right to create a BFG to English Dictionary to create definitions for his gibberish, while secretly practicing using context clues. Students can infer the meanings of the words and phrases used by the BFG and the handout includes a section for students to record what made them decide on their definition.
Note: This "2" page document is simply the same page twice. The students enjoyed filling in their dictionaries so much that I printed them double-sided once the first ones were filled in.
Lots of fun! Students loved translating the BFG language. Enjoy!
