THREE AWARD-WINNING, BLACK HISTORY PICTURE BOOKS about three Black entrepreneurs!!
THE HALLELUJAH FLIGHT by Phil Bildner is a fictionalized story of the cross-country flight of James Banning who had a dream. He dreamed of being the first African-American pilot to make a transcontinental flight across North America in 1932. Along with his mechanic, Thomas Allen, Banning cobbled together pieces of a dilapidated OXX6 Eagle Rock bi-wing airplane and chugged from California to New York in 21 days. How did he do it with no money? What unimaginable plan enabled the two unlikely men to embark on an extraordinary adventure into history?
FLY HIGH BESSIE COLEMAN by by Louise Borden and Mary Kay Kroeger is the story of Bessie Coleman who dreamt of flying an airplane, but could this be anything more than a dream? After all, no other African American had ever been given a pilot’s license before 1921! What would happen if she dared to step forward and say, “I can do it...no matter what!” Yes! She conquered this giant named “It’s Never Been Done” and became the first black woman to earn her wings!
GEORGE COLEMAN AND THE SARATOGA CHIP
If you made a list of your favorite snacks, you would probably list one that was invented by George Crum. Who was George Crum? Not many people expected George to do anything so great. After all, didn't he have trouble in school? Didn't his classmates make fun of him? And, wasn't he full of fun, joking and teasing often with his little sister? Certainly no one in the early 1800s expected this man of color to become a celebrated chef! Only white people could become chefs!
But, George rode the ripples from the stones thrown into his life's pond to become the most famous chef in Saratoga Springs. Even then, fussy people occasionally complained about his cooking and made fun of him, but he learned to let those ripples pass him without much notice...all except one...and he rode that one into the history books to become the inventor of one of your favorite snacks. So what was this snack, you ask? Read George Crum and the Saratoga Chip to find out!
A perfect literary addition for Black History Month because George's parents were African-American and Native American!
