This is from primary historical material, that is stories given to WPA government workers in the 1930s and, of course, used dialect and so here spelling and usage etc have been edited to make the reading easier, for example as when “masta” has been re-spelled as “master;” but on the other hand, for example, “missus” and “ain’t” have been retained to give a better feel for the original. They had been asked to relate their stories for prior to Lincoln's emancipation during the America Civil War and to some extent since then. What they gave is truly for you and your students.
Most of this consists of the narratives although there are also fun word searches, a test, a reader about the American Civil War in general, Handy Links on the war, a John Brown Photos Show.
The narratives show for example that during slavery children who were black and part white were sometimes torn from their mothers and sold by slave traders; grown men were beaten worse than livestock, etc. When interviewed, the fear that they might somehow be returned to slavery, harmed or killed for telling other than a “rosey” story understandably kept many from giving details about the more tragic parts of slavery. However others bravely did do so, concerned that future generations should know the reality.
