This resource includes 10 non-fiction passages, activities and a 5 page test based on the memoir by Solomon Northup. (Movie title: 12 Years a Slave.) Please note that there are references to violence and brutality (that Northup experienced) in the narrative, but I have not used graphic language to describe the events, nor gone into great detail. Please use your discretion when considering the unit for a particular age group or for students who might find the topic distressing.
Some time ago I read this narrative published in the mid-19th century. Solomon Northup was a free black man living in New York who was kidnapped and pressed into slavery in 1841. I have summarized the story in ten parts - this is my original work, summarized from the original memoir.
This product includes :
---10 reading passages;
--- each passage has three vocabulary terms or words and separate activity page for each passage.
--- the activity pages have 3 comprehension questions, a subjective question, and at the bottom of each page is a Discussion Point, a short excerpt from the memoir “Twelve Years a Slave”. These discussion topics are for the teacher to use in class and they can be further developed as additional activities for students.
--- also included is a 5 page test, each page covering two narratives. There are 6 multiple-choice questions and one question asking students to discuss the main idea of one passage with supporting details.
---There is an 8- page answer key for the objective questions (there is no answer key for the vocabulary words) and the test.
All the information in the passages is from Northup’s books and as far as I know is historically correct. The original book is in the public domain (due to age) and can be read online at various sites.
I also have two products about Solomon Northup for younger students. They can be seen here:
