The California Department of Education has approved and accepted the B.R.A.V.E. ("Be Resilient Avoid Violence Everywhere") violence education and prevention curriculum, written by Dr. James E. Shaw, for Middle School and High School. Dr. Shaw has been an educator for over 25 years and is a professor at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, where he teaches Mental Health Law; Forensic Psychology; Life Span Development; and Social Bases of Behavior.
Dr. Shaw wrote B.R.A.V.E. and piloted it with 400 students and 55 teachers at a middle school in the Downey Unified School District (CA) after a 6th-grader brought to that school a loaded .38 handgun and began brandishing it. B.R.A.V.E. trains middle and high school students in anger management, resilience, bullying education, and taking personal and social leadership responsibility to avoid violence and, instead, pursue peaceful alternatives. Using the case method of instruction and filled with lesson plans, B.R.A.V.E. uses well-known role models to reinforce leadership lessons but is flexible so that teachers can substitute other persons of distinction if they prefer.
B.R.A.V.E. was cited by the Philadelphia Regional Office of the ATF/FBI as an "example of best community practices." Dr. Shaw was featured on FOXNews, December 17, 2012, being interviewed about the horrific Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. He was also a keynote speaker at the Columbine High School commemoration ceremonies in Littleton, CO. FOXNews anchor Megyn Kelly repeatedly read, on the air, passages from Dr. Shaw's Columbine speech. Relatively few "outsiders" or strangers storm onto school campuses and engage in acts of violence.
The majority of violent incidents--including shooting deaths--on school campuses are caused by well-known students in attendance at those campuses. For that reason, B.R.A.V.E. is expressly for middle and high school students and is designed to arm them with leadership skills to manage and enhance the welfare and safety of their campuses. Dr. Shaw has received official commendation from the California State Legislature and has been requested by state governors and senators to speak to conferences of students, law enforcement personnel, judges, parents, teachers, and community activists. Dr. Shaw, as a national Court-Certified Expert Witness, represents school districts in litigation. He is Associate Member #00711062 of the American Bar Association. For school district Superintendents who wanted to know everything about violence and school safety but were sued first: For future planning, B.R.A.V.E. might well be the antidote to litigation and rescue or revitalize the careers of Superintendents.
