"BUMP!" is a fun way for your students to practice word families. (You may also know these as phonograms, rimes, or spelling patterns.) It allows for repeated exposure to the word family chunks you want your children to recognize automatically, but in an engaging and kinesthetic way that is sometimes lost in traditional flash-card practice. It's important for developing readers to recognize these familiar chunks in new words so they'll become more proficient readers. When young readers begin to notice common word families in the words in their texts, it eliminates the need to "sound out" every letter. Knowing word families is also a powerful spelling tool for children. This game makes practicing them fun.
Instead of practicing on paper flash cards, this download presents the word families electronically, in a slide show. There is a slide for each of the 37 most common spelling patterns in English (plus a few more). Randomly placed throughout the slides are the words BUMP, STOMP, CLAP, SNAP, and WIGGLE. Your students' attention will be focused on reading the slides as they anticipate seeing the fun action words pop up. When they see an action word, they say the word and do the action. A picture clue has been included with each action word to help support emergent readers.
If you use computers during center time, you can load the slide show onto student computers to allow for independent or partner practice.
