I developed this comprehension strategy visual prompt card based best practices and current research to assist students in remembering what they read. It is an easy-to-remember, 4-step process that students can apply to any subject or content area that will prompt them to use comprehension strategies while reading. The visual strategy is formatted in two ways--as a full, 8 x 10 page which can be printed and posted in a classroom and as a postcard-sized prompt card (4-per-page) that can be used with individual students. This product is appropriate for students from 1st grade through high school. It is particularly useful for students who have language processing difficulties or learning disabilities.
Do you have students who wait passively in class for you to specifically and individually give them instructions at each step before moving forward in an assignment or activity? This is a challenging situation as it reduces the student’s ability to work productively in class and requires a lot of the teacher’s one-on-one time. This visual strategy card will help students to figure out what to do when they get stuck on a problem or are unsure of how to proceed. It reduces the need for the verbal redirection and assists students in developing problem-solving, confidence, executive functioning skills and independence in class. The PDF file contains two different sizes of this visual support strategy cards that you can easily print. For a larger-sized prompt card, print the sheet that contains 2-per-page. For a postcard-sized prompt card, print the sheet containing 4-per-page.
Do you have students who come to a complete stop in class when they aren't sure what to do next or when they are confronted by a challenging problem? Perhaps you have students who do one problem or step at a time and then passively wait for you to check in with them one-on-one before they will proceed to the next step. I have had many students like this over the years so I developed this prompt card to help them to develop confidence and initiative in class. Instead of waiting passively for the teacher to notice that they need help, students can refer to this card for some visual cues and a strategy to help them decide what to do next. It reduces reliance on verbal prompts from the teacher and promotes student independence, problem-solving and critical thinking. The PDF file contains two different sizes of this visual support strategy cards that you can easily print. For a larger-sized prompt card, print the sheet that contains 2-per-page. For a postcard-sized prompt card, print the sheet containing 4-per-page.
