Directions and Suggestions (TEXT FEATURES)
Start this lesson by printing out the "Text Features Notes" pages for each of your students. Have them fill in the blank box while you present and teach using the slide show. Tip: Student can use their notes to study for the assessment! Print out the mix-and-match activity as a fun way to get your students more familiar with text features! Have them work in groups (3-4 students per group) and have them match the terms with the image that represents them.
You can use the anchor chart at your discretion, but I suggest you use this for any students with specific "notes provided" accommodations (504 and SPED). You can also use the anchor chart to pass out to students who are absent for the lesson so they can effectively study for the assessment.
Once your students are familiar with text features, schedule a class period to take for the assessment. The assessment should take around 20-30 minutes, so give your students enough class time to complete it.
Directions and Suggestions (TEXT STRUCTURES)
Start this lesson off by printing enough "Exploring Text Structures" Notes. Be sure to include the check for understanding on the back (titled "Identify the Text Structure"). Then, present the lesson via Google Slides! That's it! For extra practice, print out the 5-page text structure independent practice. An anchor chart is also included to use as needed!
PRO TIP: There are higher-order thinking questions on each slide. Ask your students these questions as a whole group. This allows the slower writers to write down all of the information AND challenges your students to think deeply about the content presented.
