PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The attached file is a six week-long unit designed to go with the first grade Common Core Curriculum Map Unit "Alphabet Books and Children Who Read Them." This is the first unit in the Curriculum Map book and I have designed it to be so. However, it does not have to be taught in this particular order. Each week has a five day lesson plan and a student packet with cover page and several student activity pages. There are links to brainpopjr.com videos if you have access to it and other technology links. I have included both PDF and Word versions of each document if you would like to make changes to them.

The plans include: focus standards, vocabulary, essential questions, I can statements and technology links.

I have outlined the title of each week, the texts needed (these could be changed if needed) and the focus standards of the lessons.

Week 1: Staying Healthy

Week 2: ABC Books

Week 4: Let’s Go to the Library

Week 6: Little Bear Stories

Students will begin the school year focusing on how to stay healthy to be good learners. They will focus on identifying the topic of a text and retelling the details. They will read several alphabet books and compare and contrast them. They will read books about being a good reader and learner and discussing why it is important to be able to read. They will read stories about libraries and how reading can change a person’s life while beginning to focus on describing narrative elements and answering questions about a text. They will begin reading poems and finding the words that show feelings and appeal to the senses. They will conclude this unit by reading books about Little Bear, a curious bear who loves to hear stories from his grandparents.
