BUTTERFLY DIGITAL DIRECTED DRAWING IN GOOGLE DRIVE™

Google Apps™

Description
Digital Directed Drawings are a great way for students to practice following directions while learning how to use digital tools to make designs. This resource will require students to create a butterfly. The typed directions are editable. Vocabulary terms covered in the directions include: wings, thorax, head, and antenna. Students will type a few sentences or paragraph about the life cycle of the butterfly once they have completed their design.
The teacher will project the included directions presentation in Google Slides™ on the board. Students will open a new Google Drawing™ template on their Chromebook, laptop or computer. (Google Drawing is not available on iPads). The slides in the presentation walk students through each step to create a simple butterfly. Each step is animated (when in presentation mode) so students can read the directions, carry out the directives on their device and then check to see if they did the step correctly once the main presentation advances (just click!). I have included an animated gif to show students how to rotate images. The last step of the activity requires students to type a few sentences about the butterfly lifecycle and highlight the science vocabulary terms.
Technology skills covered:
★Undo
★Using the Shapes tool to draw a heart (wings), oval (thorax), circle (head & eyes), moon (mouth)
★Rotating images
★Changing colors of shapes/drawings
★Duplicating or creating a copy of objects
★Customizing font (style, size and color)
★Highlighting words
★Using the line tool
★Creating an end point on a line (for antennas)
★Changing the background color on a Google Drawing
Three skills are hit in this one activity: technology fluency, science (butterfly life cycle) and writing. This Google Classroom activity would be GREAT for children who are just beginning to learn how to use Google Drawing™.
