This is a great eye-opening experience for students to realize and reflect on the reality of the financial burden of babies at any age. I have used this version of with junior and senior level students. I do have a different version that I used with 9th grade students. Depending on your level of students and the content you teach, this project can be used with students at any high school level.
In this project, students must engage in communications with their parent/guardian/care-giver to learn about the cost of living expenses as they are currently accustomed to living. From there students will do mini-research to find a career, at a given educational level, and calculate net monthly income. Students then evaluate whether they could afford current living expenses given their new-found career.
Next, students will use online tools to research the costs of baby related items that are generally necessary to most new parents. Students will calculate a one year’s cost for babies and break the cost down into monthly and weekly costs.
Finally students will complete evaluation questions and a reflection essay using what they learned from the project to demonstrate their learning and understanding of the financial costs of babies.
