In this activity students work individually or in pairs to put their portion of the Babylonian creation myth (which can be read as a class before beginning) into their own words, then create an illustration.
I have students write their passage in their own words on the back in order to proof-read it, then let them transfer it onto the front lines. They then use the framed section to create an illustration. To save paper I project the story so we can popcorn read it as a class and simply have them copy their portion of the story on the back of their paper.
I love seeing their creativity shine (the artists and manga fans particularly love it) and particularly enjoy their enthusiasm when I tell them they can include reasonable amounts of violence/gore.
Easily differentiated using modified grading and assistance with putting it into their own words.
