Engaging activities so you can get to know your students!
These Back To School out-of-your-seat activities are fun and have the kids interacting with their classmates. The first few weeks of school are exciting and scary for everyone – students and teachers! So use these 4 ready-to-print activities to get to know your students better – and allow them to learn about each other, as well.
• Get students engaged!
• Fill unexpected free time!
• Encourage participation and conversation!
• Several activities require students to “think deep” so you can get to know them on an emotional level, too!
• Get the kids up and moving while making new friends!
• Are ready-to-print
• Can be printed in color or grayscale/black and white.
• Include all fill-in documents and graphics, plus instructions for the activities that require explaining.
The four activities included are:
Find Someone Who…
Students roam around the room to mingle and question their classmates. Have them fill in the name of the student who meets the description. Options: set a time limit, make it a contest to see who can fill a row/whole page first, fill all four corners, etc.
Students will create emojis that they can relate to. These can be emotions, objects, etc. Be sure they understand that they must be able to explain their design and why they designed it. Create an Emoji Wall to display the finished products!
Stand Up, Sit Down.
This is a group activity in which students further get to know their classmates and share new information with the class. Some extra space will be needed so the kids can safely “stand up, sit down.” A list of questions is included, but more localized questions would be a great addition to the activity!
This group activity requires some critical thinking. Students will choose an animal with which they relate and answer questions on the enclosed sheet. They will work with a group to create an illustration and description of their chosen animal. Some pre-teaching of personality traits and descriptive words may be necessary, depending on the age/abilities of your class.
