The beginning of the year is a special time! The kids are on their best behavior and it is a great time to introduce important reading skills and strategies in a fun way!
*In this packet, I show you how to incorporate "thinking maps" into the first week of school. These are graphic organizers that can be used within every single school subject! Use them for the following skills:
Circle Map: (to define, or generate ideas)
Bubble Map: (to describe)
Flow Map: (to sequence)
Brace Map: (to show whole-part relationships)
Tree Map: (to classify)
Double Bubble Map: (to compare and contrast)
Multiflow Map: (to show cause and effect relationships)
MI-3D: (to determine the main idea and details of a text)
*Also in this packet, I have created three texts: a fiction passage, a nonfiction passage, and a poem. They are fun and "back to school" themed! I have included comprehension questions the review the following reading topics:
*It also includes multiple choice, short answer, and fill in the blank questions!
This is the PERFECT packet for the first week of school. Your principal will be impressed that they are already reviewing grade-level skills and using graphic organizers! (I know mine always is!)
Students can keep this packet in their binders/folders to remember how to use the thinking maps. The BEST part is, as soon as they know them, they can re-create them on their own paper instead of printing tons of copies.
This is not only a good teaching tool and introduction to the year, but a great way to asses prior knowledge!
(Also includes an answer key at the end!)
