** Looking for a rigorous, unique BACK TO SCHOOL project that involves art, math, and international studies?
** Do you need something to entice reluctant students?
** Are your students like mine and don't want to do the same "get to know you" activities as all other classes?
** Does your school require a dynamic (age appropriate) bulletin board?
If you said yes to any of these or you are the kind of teacher that thinks outside the box, then you've found your answer!
This file contains a PowerPoint with 48 slides, a Mandala template (just in case), teaching notes and bulletin board accompany sheet.
The PowerPoint introduces the basic idea of Mandalas, their history, presence in nature, modern uses, and the Tibetan Monk ceremony in a pictures and link to video. The students are amaze at the detail and hard work involved. It's a great time to discuss the importance of working hard and staying the course. Math is also prominent in all of this work! Sometimes I send the whole period with the PowerPoint and save the task for the next day!
The PowerPoint also provides many examples from students, professionals, nature and computer generated. I like to have the examples on automatic scroll when the students are completing their own Mandala.
The task is to create a Mandala about themselves. I leave the design strictly up to the students with requirements on size only. I do provide a template for the younger students or students who may have difficulty getting started.
I love this for back to school time! It is new for the students, engaging, and makes a wonderful long-term bulletin board. It also frees you up to complete all those admin tasks required during that first week. (I do provide art supplies that first week - it saves a lot of wasted time.)
The idea of a Mandala can be incorporated in math several ways. I like to use it as a graphic organizer for students with the basic concept in the middle and the parts radiating out from the center. The kids always want to color them..Why not?!
