What better way to get to know where your students stand in terms of likes and dislikes, self-confidence, and aspirations than to simply ask them. Rather than jumping right into the baseline tests that we will use to determine what students can do, this inventory gives us a glimpse into their minds to see how they feel about Reading. It gives a face to the data we will be collecting over the following days and weeks. Students can keep these as the first page in their binders, notebooks or folders depending on which you use in your classroom as a reminder of who they were when they entered the grade. This is also another opportunity for building community by sharing out as a class. I take this opportunity to reinforce the sign for “me too” which is a silent way for students to reaffirm another’s statements without breaking the speaker’s train of thought. It also helps to build the sense of inclusiveness and acceptance, important first steps to establishing community.
Possible Extension: Use this inventory as a graphic organizer for writing All About Me essays. This also can be reissued at various points of the year to show growth and changing attitudes.
