These exercises target common mistakes using modals and are designed for review, extra practice and/or step by step scaffolding. They are NOT lessons. Modals should be formally taught before attempting these exercises.
You can compile the exercises into a packet or booklet for the students or just give the exercise you find appropriate. You can even use specific exercises as a quiz.
Each section is preceded by the grammar rules that should be followed. Each section includes a progress scale for the teacher to mark. Just use a highlighter to mark the student’s progress on the scale. You can highlight a box or even between boxes. Ideally, the students’ performance would improve as they progress through the exercises.
• Common mistakes using can and cannot
• Common mistakes using could and should
• Common mistakes using can, should, must
My ESL students have found these booklets useful and have kept them for reference over the years.
Note: for students who have low confidence, I have found that making a half page booklet or giving the handouts a page at a time helps them tackle the task. Perhaps it seems less daunting.
