As educators we recognize that what we do in our classrooms plays an essential role in preparing our students to become respectful, compassionate, knowledgeable, responsible, and caring adults. To support the social emotional learning of students, Creativity That Works suggests The Back to Basics: Social Emotional Learning series as a perfect learning tool for use as an introduction to building a strong learning environment. This series will help with setting the tone/classroom management in the beginning of the school year and after extended breaks (winter and spring break). The series also provides great discussion topics during morning meetings and can be used for daily classwork (close reading and annotation practice) and weekly home assignments.
Each of the 6 packs (Back to Basics: Social Emotional Learning Series – Empathy coming early spring, 2016) includes 6 original reading passages for teaching and reviewing social emotional learning skills within the school and classroom. The passages are written within the 3rd - 5th grade Lexile band. These passages are perfect for 3rd grade stretch texts, 4th and 5th grade independent reading and, 6th- 8th grade small group (low readers) settings.
The 6 passages include reading comprehension questions aligned with Common Core Standards. These passages provide your students with annotation, fluency, reading vocabulary, reading comprehension and written response practice. The reading passages can be used as independent seat work within the classroom, in partner reading, in small group setting (especially when working with diverse learning needs) and, in whole group setting (especially when working with students below grade level in reading).
