100s Grids for Math Support Number Sense using Landmark Numbers
This resource is meant to encourage students to use landmark numbers to search for the space (value) of an amount, not number identification on a grid.
For example, to use these grids to solve
95 – 3 = ?
students may need to use 100 to find 95 and count backward to the answer or use 89 to jump to 90 add 5 squares then go back another 3. Or… Or…Or! There are infinite possibilities for student processing.
Using these grids to explain thinking will also show you who has number sense (able to manipulate values to simplify the task) vs. only symbol sense (identify the number and do the operation.)
Students can use plastic markers to jump around and reduce the old habit of filling in the squares with 100 missing numbers.
