This is a lesson to check for prior knowledge and to introduce some of the topics that will be covered in this school year. Your students will work in pairs touring a classroom "gallery walk" while completing a graphic organizer. There are 12 photos/pictures covering a variety of topics - Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, the cotton gin, Women's Rights, the Bill of Rights, Frederick Douglass, slavery, the Constitution, The Declaration of Independence, Pioneers, Manifest Destiny, the Civil War.
Student pairs will look at each picture and discuss what they believe the picture is about and the role it played in US History. After they have entered their thoughts on the graphic organizer, the teacher will show a PowerPoint that gives brief bullet notes that student will use to complete their organizer.
My kids enjoy tapping into their prior knowledge with this activity. It is also a great way to introduce a few key terms (manifest destiny, abolition, individual rights, etc.) to begin the year.
The documents are all in Word format so that you may add or delete as you see fit.
Thanks and have a GREAT school year!
