Find a Friend

“Find A Friend” is a cooperative learning structure that is terrific to get students up and moving, as well as interacting with each other.

In my classroom, we use “Find A Friend” in many ways:

-as a fun alternative to independent practice

-as a review before quizzes

-for spiral review of previously learned concepts

-prior to high-stakes testing

-as an engaging activity for the end of the school year

Depending on the concept, students may spend 10-20 minutes completing the activity.

Differentiated Task Cards

Task cards are a versatile classroom tool. Try them:

-as an independent or partner activity in learning stations

-for test prep or review


-printed and cut apart for students to solve independently in math journals

-with various whole class cooperative learning structures, like Quiz-Quiz-Trade, Fan n Pick, or Inside-Outside Circle


-with various partner cooperative learning structures, such as Rally Coach or Sage n Scribe


The included task cards include varying levels of difficulty. Circles are level 1, Stars are level 2, Squares are level 3, and Triangles are level 4. You can specifically target your students’ needs using the different levels available.

Partner Math

Use these variations to support differentiation in your classroom:

-The included pages are all on the same content, with varying levels of difficulty. Circles are level 1, Stars are level 2, Squares are level 3, and Triangles are level 4. You can specifically target your students’ needs using the different levels available.

-Students who need more support can complete their pages with a partner, then partner up again to compare solutions.

-If you’d like students to compare in small groups rather than with partners, simply copy each page twice, so students meet together in groups of four rather than two.

Recognize area as additive. Find areas of rectilinear figures by decomposing them into non-overlapping rectangles and adding the areas of the non-overlapping parts, applying this technique to solve real world problems.
Use tiling to show in a concrete case that the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths 𝘢 and 𝘣 + 𝘤 is the sum of 𝘢 × 𝘣 and 𝘢 × 𝘤. Use area models to represent the distributive property in mathematical reasoning.
Partition shapes into parts with equal areas. Express the area of each part as a unit fraction of the whole. For example, partition a shape into 4 parts with equal area, and describe the area of each part as 1/4 of the area of the shape.
Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
