PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

These EDITABLE back to school activities and mini-unit are great for your middle school classroom. These activities are academically challenging and an extremely beneficial way to start the year off on the right foot! These are not "fluff" back to school activities!

In this mini-unit and activities, students will analyze a short literary piece from Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street (the chapter titled "My Name") using close reading strategies on our Close Reading Strategies Bookmarks (which are included in this unit), write a unique narrative about the origin and meaning of their own name, and build community in your classroom as students learn more about each other.

INCLUDED IN THIS UNIT:
- INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE - we walk you step-by-step in how best to utilize this mini-unit (but you can always change how you use this resource since it is EDITABLE)
- FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE CHEAT SHEET to help students find examples of figurative language in the "My Name" excerpt. (EDITABLE DOCUMENT)
- CLOSE READING STRATEGIES BOOKMARKS to assist students as they close read the excerpt from the text. These bookmarks include 7 different reading strategies, along with questions and suggestions for students to use as they analyze the text. (These are NOT EDITABLE).
- BLACK STUDENT COPY OF "MY NAME" (EDITABLE DOCUMENT)
- TEACHER ANNOTATED COPY OF "MY NAME" - detailed annotations to help you effectively teach this literary piece. (EDITABLE DOCUMENT)
- YOUR NAME GRAPHIC ORGANIZER is an activity that is meant to get students familiar with the history, origin, meaning, and feelings about their name. This is the starting point that will get them thinking about writing their own unique narrative similar to the "My Name' chapter they have just read. (EDITABLE DOCUMENT)
- YOUR NAME SHORT STORY asks students to use the information from their graphic organizer to write their own 2-3 paragraph short story about the significance and history of their own name. We've made this visually appealing for you, so students can cut out their stories and you can hang them up around your classroom! (EDITABLE DOCUMENT)
- SHORT STORY RUBRIC includes four areas of assessment - expectations, figurative language, voice, and mechanics. (EDITABLE DOCUMENT)
