One of the best things about this set, besides the fact that it’s so easy to use, is the variety of activities it provides. The worksheets are great to use as morning work and will help you get to know your kids so much better. These low-stress handouts are a great way for your students to ease back into school after summer break.

The Good Friend Worksheet, A Good Teacher Worksheet, and Peacemakers/Peacebreakers Worksheet are awesome to use with small groups, individually or as a review for important beginning of the year discussions. One way to use them is as a Morning Meeting follow up.

Language Arts skills are included in this set as kids are asked to do a fun writing activity called The Wonderful, Fantastic, So Good, Awesome Day, which was inspired by Judith Viorst’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day book. Great discussions leads to great writing and talking about what things would make our best day ever (maybe starting with a maid bringing you breakfast in bed?) is a fun springboard to writing and an easy way to quickly assess student’s writing skills.

Six Things for Sixth Grade asks kids a number of questions like name six things under the sea besides fish or name six things you would like to have on a deserted island. Perfect for sixth grade! There’s also a Latin/Greek root page with Hex Means Five. This challenging matching activity might be done as a whole class or in small groups and will help kids become more aware of our language.

There are several math activities from Math About Me, a Class Favorites Survey and Graphing Activity (great getting to know you activity too) and a 100% Smart Activity, which not only helps kids review circle graphs and basic percentages (it has to add up to 100%) but also is a great way to connect with your students by knowing their strengths and interests.

The Procedure Review Small Group Activity helps kids review rules as they create and then present those procedures or rules in a number of ways. They might create a poem to present, make a poster, or do a skit, if you’d like. Lots of open ended ways to share, means that kids will hopefully choose something that is fun for them, while reinforcing the procedures at the same time.

Lastly are the task cards. Oh, I do love task cards! The kids see them as just plain fun and a chance to move around the room but I know better. These task cards give kids real life school scenarios and ask what they would do. It gives kids a chance to move beyond just the stating of a rule to the application of it. Questions like “What would you do if you were stuck on a math problem but the teacher was working with a small group,” or “What would you do if the teacher was presenting a lesson and you had to use the restroom?” Good stuff and happens all the time! These 32 task cards and a class discussion afterwards will help kids internalize the things we want them to know to make our classroom run more smoothly.

I love the beginning of the year and am so happy to be able to share this set that is loaded with some of the things I do. I think these resources are ones you’ll use year after year, not only because of the variety of materials that kids enjoy, but because the activities target a number of good learning goals. I hope you enjoy using it as much as I do.
