Start the first week of school with activities that will help students be more successful throughout the term. We all know the frustration of watching students fail to reach their potential. Usually it happens, not because of a lack of ability, but because of a lack of understanding of what it takes to do well. I’ve learned over the years that I can’t assume that my students know how to be organized and how they learn best, so now I start each semester with a little “student 101”.
This product replicates the process I have used to guide my second-ary ELA students. It’s designed to be used at the first of each period over five days. If you want, you can spend more time by exploring each of the topics more deeply.
Each day begins with a quick grammar review of common grammar errors (commonly confused words, pronoun agreement, subject-verb agreement, fragments and run-ons). The exercises are accompanied by a slide show that helps you guide the discussion. The grammar reviews serve a dual purpose: they also include tips about organization and learning how to learn. Each day the students will discuss ideas and reflect on what they have learned.
On the fifth and final day, students will review the grammar concepts, and you will pass out the organizational handouts. Spend some time discussing how they can use the pages to plan their week and to reflect on their learning.
