Students will learn about schools in Australia, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Finland, France, Germany, India, Iran, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Korea, and Russia. This passage is perfect to introduce close reading strategies, practice making inferences, or demonstrate comparing and contrasting strategies.


Teacher Tips for Close Reading

o First Read – This passage can be read during whole group or small group instruction. During the first read, students just gain a general feel of the passage. This is when students determine the genre of the passage and the author’s purpose. Students are free to jot down their thoughts as they read the article!

o Second Read – During the second read, students dig a little deeper into the text. Ask students to highlight unknown words, notice text structure, and make connections to the text. The graphic organizer is perfect to support students during their second read. This may be done in partners to facilitate discussion.

o Third Read – Students will begin making inferences and drawing conclusions. Ask students to summarize the passage or give the main idea. Multiple choice and essay questions can be completed after the third read. Be sure to have students support their answers with textual evidence.


Extension Activity Ideas

o Research a country mentioned in this article

o Create a brochure on one country’s educational practices

o Give a presentation about topic in the article (recess, lunch, etc…)

o Complete a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting two countries

o Write a letter to the principal using information provided in the article
