Creating a Digital Story!
This product is for a technology project for students to complete entitled “Dear Future Selfie”. This would be an excellent project for the beginning of the school year so students can introduced themselves to the teacher or to reflect on the school year. It includes a 15 slide PowerPoint presentation, two graphic organizers with space to brainstorm for script and technology ideas, two rubrics, and the “Dear Future Selfie” letter template. The PowerPoint explains each part of the digital story offering examples and technology ideas. There are two graphic organizers: one for writing a script or story and the other to brainstorm ideas for technology integration throughout the digital story. There are two rubrics. One assess the content of the digital story and the other assesses the presentation. Lastly, there is a PDF file which contains the letter, “Dear Future Selfie”, which students will compose to themselves. The letter also has a brief grading rubric. (Bonus – there is an interview form that students can use as a “first day of school” homework assignment. – This does not have a part in the digital story).
Each student will complete a first draft of a letter addressed to their future “selfie”. Students will answer various questions about their likes, dislikes, goals and hobbies. Then, students will take their ideas from their letter to begin a storyboard and script for their digital story: “Dear Future Selfie”. The idea is that students will be able to look back at this story later in life to remember themselves at their current point in life.
Based from the letter, there are twelve slides in 3-5 minutes to complete. Students may use any means to create their digital story, but PowerPoint will be recommended as it will the beginning of the year. The digital story will be a way for students to introduce themselves to the teacher and fellow students and have a tangible, relevant product as a keepsake. It will also serve as a basis for technology knowledge to begin the school year.
Twelve simple ideas are presented in the letter. The students will take these twelve ideas and turn them into a story about themselves. This will be a story that, ultimately, they will view when looking back on their school years. The students will be encouraged to be creative and have fun with their story. They will need to have access to a computer, internet, an iPad, a microphone and various programs to help with their story. Students will import a variety of media including video, photographs, “selfies”, audio, and more and use appropriate transitions and animations in their presentation. Lastly, the students will present their digital story to the class.
In addition, this "Back to School Bundle" there is also included a product is for a fun, first day or week of school, activity: Create a “fortune teller”! It is a zip file which contains 3 printable PDF files. The first is a two page, printable instruction sheet with visuals and instructions showing how to cut and fold the fortune teller. The second PDF is a color printable which is the fortune teller. There are 8 genres and 8 titles for the students to choose from. Students work with a partner and choose a genre. Then they count the and fold the fortune teller the amount of letters that the genre contains. Wherever it lands, they choose a title. They can then reveal their fortune or repeat by choosing an additional title. In the end, a “fortune” will be revealed to them that is based on the theme of the title chosen. This is an English, ELA, themed game.
This is a fun, interactive activity that can be used to begin the school year or just supply a quick fun activity. It works best to allow students to get to know one another. There is also a blank fortune teller if the students wanted to make their own or if a teacher wanted to use it for an additional subject. I hope it is engaging and fun for your upper elementary/middle school students.
Some knowledge of PowerPoint, Google Slides, You Tube Editor, or Windows Movie Maker are needed to guide this project. Also, you will need to supply the technology tools to complete the project. The actual amount of time that this project will take will largely depend on the age group, technology experience, available resources, and internet connection.
