This is a great "first week of school" activity to allow you to set a positive tone for your classroom throughout the school year. You could also use this with the staff in your building as an "ice-breaker" during a professional development day. Students are placed in teams and they receive a bag full of items that you provide. As a team the students make observations and write down a reflection as to what they believe each item in in the bag represents for the classroom. When all students are done a great classroom discussion happens and as the teacher you can state the classroom expectations and go over the rules in a positive way. I also have a PowerPoint that goes with the template that I use for my classroom to serve as a visual for what each item represents. This activity can be done across all grade levels and in every subject, including special education classrooms. If you don't have access to all of the items that go in the bag, you can also use pictures of the items instead or easily modify the list to meet your needs.
