As a kid, I always loved school, so it makes sense that I became a teacher. I did not, however, always love the typical back-to-school ice breakers. They left me feeling put on the spot and embarrassed. As a teacher, I carry a new perspective since I realize not every student has an amazing vacation story to share with the rest of the class.
With all of this in mind, I set out to create a fun, engaging back-to-school activity that students would NOT dread.
This Breakout Box activity consists of 3 tasks.
--The first two tasks are based on your course syllabus (a syllabus template* is provided within this document). Students must solve puzzles, riddles, and secret codes to learn more about your class rules, expectations, and procedures.
--The third task is growth-mindset oriented. Students must complete mindset surveys, watch a video to learn more about growth mindset, and complete a mindset maze with their group members.
These activities are designed to encourage collaboration among students in a fun and challenging way. Rather than stand in front of the class for the typical back-to-school lecture over your course syllabus, why not consider turning it into a memorable game that will set an engaging tone from the start?
This is a Breakout Box styled game, meaning that students do not have to leave their seats to complete each task. (However, this would not be difficult to turn into an Escape Room. Feel free to message me for more details before or after purchase.)

PLEASE NOTE: This activity takes around 45-60 minutes to complete, and it does require minor technology (students will need access to an online video).
