Back to School Bulletin Board: It's a "Class Character Quilt". Your students will have fun celebrating back-to-school as they connect character traits to themselves. By doing so, you will learn a great deal about your students. This is a fun alternative to the normal 'all about me' poster that you might be used to. It also makes a great display for open house/curriculum night when all of the parents come in.
In order to help you and the class learn more about each student, the students will finish the sentences written below. Tell them to connect the character word to something from their life to help the class learn more about them.
I am polite when
I am brave when
I am caring when
I am energetic when
I am sad when
I am friendly when
I am scared when
I am silly when
I am noisy when
I am nice when
I am thoughtful when
I am artistic when
I am happy when
**A title pennant banner is also included.
Students will also color patterned pieces on the quilt square. There are two of the SAME patterns on each quilt piece. (see the cover photo and preview) Students can use different colors though if they want. There are 25 quilt square designs to choose from. Some quilt coloring pieces will take less time than others. You can decide if you want to give each child a different pattern or if you want the kids to do the same one just using different colors. Also decide the difficulty level of the coloring by the patterns you select.
Once the quilt squares are filled out and colored, have your students share with a small group or the class. Connect the patterned squares to form a class quilt. You could display this in the hallway or on a bulletin board. You can even keep it up all year. Plus, it makes for a neat keepsake for mothers to put in their memory box.
Although I call this a back-to-school activity, you could really do this any time you want to learn a little more about your students.
