Need a fresh warm up or sponge activity? Ever finished a lesson early, and needed something engaging to fill up the time? Ever had a crisis situation in class, and needed something meaningful to engage the other students with while you handled it?
The category game is an easy and fun solution! Just print, and keep it in a convenient spot in your room for easy access. I keep my cards ready to go in a plastic organizer bin.
Students are given a game board with four categories on it. They are given a letter, and they have to brainstorm as many words that begin with the letter for each category.
Set a timer, and students work on it independently. Then students take turns sharing their answers in a group discussion.
The activity focuses on phonics, but it also focuses on social skills! Students have to get the teacher's attention to share their answers, wait their turn to speak, and listen to others.
