Resource Directions:


Back to School Literature List: Choose books from the list about back to school to read to your students.

Back to School Writing Station Words: Print and laminate a few colored copies of the Back to School Writing Station words for students to use or copy one sheet for each student to put in their writing folder or journal.


Classroom Books:

“School, School What Do You See?” Classroom Book: Read the book “ Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? A few times to students. Copy cover on cardstock and then copy the student sheet (2 types) for each student and have them write and draw the color of something they see at school. Collect each student paper and make classroom book binding or stapling book together.

“Our First Day Jitters” Classroom Book: Read the book ‘First Day Jitters” to students a few times. Copy cover of classroom book on cardstock and then copy the student sheet for each student. Discuss with students what how they felt about their first day of school and if they had any jitters. Have them fill out student sheet and draw what they were thinking. Collect each student paper and make classroom book binding or stapling book together.


Student Booklets:

Back to School “I See” Student Booklet: Students can work on this booklet at center or quiet work time to practice their number and color words. Students copy over the number and color word and then color the school supplies pictures the correct color. You can copy the pages on regular paper, there are two booklet pages to each sheet with one cover and 10 other pages..

Back to School Senses Booklet:
Copy and assemble each of the “ Back to School Senses” booklets for each students . There are two booklet pages to each sheet with one cover and 6 other pages.. You can copy as many pages as you would like students to do. Students fill in the blank of each back to school senses statement and then draw a picture of what they wrote.


Student Worksheets:

Story Elements Graphic Organizers (2 types): After reading a story from the literature list a few times, have students fill out the story elements: characters, setting, problem & ending., either by drawing or writing out with words.

Retelling Graphic Organizers (3 types): After reading a story from the literature list a few times have students fill out the story retelling organizer, beginning, middle, and ending of the story. Two organizer have the boxes with lines and one is a book shape to organize the retelling.

Sequencing Graphic Organizers (3 types): After reading a story from the literature list a few times have students fill out the sequencing organizer, what happened 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. in the story either by drawing or writing out with words.


Art Projects:


Brown Bear, Brown Bear Art Project; Copy and assemble the Brown Bear with the directions and template page in unit. Hang the bear the hallway or in the classroom for decorations.

All About Me Art Project: Copy and assemble the Self-Portrait paper plate and “All About Me” sheet with the directions in the unit. Hang the Self-portraits and “All About Me” Sheets in the hallway or in the classroom for decorations.


Literacy Centers:


Back to School CVC Build a Word: After game cards are cut apart and mixed up, children take a picture card and build the word with the letter sounds to make the word. Children must have one of each colored book to make the word. Ex: backpack with bat picture needs the b-a-t to build the word correctly. Children can place the books on top of the backpack card to build the word. Back to School Build a Word Mat & Worksheet are included in resource.

Back to School Make a Word Game: Students insert vowels books (a,,e, i, o, u) onto line on the word cards and make words. Students can write words on white boards or paper. They may also use the Make A Word worksheets included in this resource.

Back to School Roll It! Read It Short Vowel Sounds:
Two game cards with words for Short Vowel Sounds of a, e, i, o & u; Students roll one dice and read the words or sentences in the row they have rolled.


Math Centers:

Back to School Number & Number Word Match Game: Children place the kids number counters to match the school house number word or numeral on the number card. Number Words cards are 0-10, Numeral cards are 0-20.

Back to School Addition & Subtraction Number Sentence Match Game: (0-10) Students match the addition or subtraction number sentence with the amount of items on the cards. This game can also be played as a matching game or memory by limiting the amount of cards to play with.

Back to School Roll & Bump 2 & 3 Addend Addition Games: Two Dice: Roll two dice and add those numbers. Cover that space with your marker. You can bump your partner’s color and take their space! If you cover a space with two markers stacked on top of each other, you lock that space and can’t be bumped. The player to use all ten of their markers first is the winner! Three Dice: Roll three number cubes and add those numbers. Cover that space with your marker. You can bump your partner’s color and take their space! If you cover a space with two markers stacked on top of each other, you lock that space and can’t be bumped.


Kids have some back to school fun while learning a variety of skills!
