Back to School Character Traits Self-Portraits

Use this selfie project at the beginning of the school year as a "Get to Know Me Activity." Students identify their character traits to complete a self-portrait but with a modern twist.

HOW IT WORKS

So let's make an iPortrait! What's an iPortrait? Essentially it's a self-description using character traits and a selfie. They also make a great bulletin board or other display for Back to School Night or Open House.

PART 1

The students explore the positive, neutral, and negative Character Traits Chart and identify one of each to describe himself or themselves. Then the student completes an iPortrait Planner to show evidence that the traits describe the student.

PART 2

In this part, the student then uses the information gained from the previous part to make an iPortrait and a Selfie. Once complete, the class can play a “Guess My Trait game!" In small groups or the whole class, students read aloud the trait evidence while others try to guess the trait.

PART 3

Now the student gets to interview a fellow student and learn about his/her character traits. Then the student makes a Classmate iPortrait. The teacher collects the Classmate iPortraits and reads them aloud without mentioning who it is. The students have to guess who it is based on the character traits described in the game “Guess Who I Am?”

PART 4

Six more templates! Here are some more ideas for your students to get to know each other better and find common bonds and likes.

• My Vacation Photo Album (draw pictures and write about activities done during the vacation break)
• My Goals for the Year (students pick five goals for the year)
• My Favorite Vacation Book (students share their favorite book read on vacation break)
• If My Life Were a Movie (students pick a movie that describes their life)
• Put Yourself in the Spotlight (students write and draw about a particular talent)
• Who's That Cute Baby? (students bring in baby pictures and add information while the others try to guess who that baby is).

PART 5

Students also can use the Paper Student Cut Out to make a Trait Puppet that reflects his/her traits.

Use one or all parts during the first week of school so students can get to know each other in a fun way!
