Setting the tone at the beginning of the year is crucial for teachers and students. I am a strong believer that students should have involvement in classroom rules/expectations. Of course, as teachers we have our few rules that are non negotiable, but allowing students to help with the other expectations allows them to feel as if they have power and that their voice is heard. When using this activity, it's up the teacher's choice. I like to first discuss with students what are community standards and why we will have them. Then, I allow the students to think of three community standards they would like added and write it down on a notecard. From there you can either review the standards privately and make a list or have students go from individual to groups to a whole class and make your list that way. Either way, it's important all students understand the standards and sign that they agree to them.
