This is a collection of three crafts/activities that are perfect for the beginning of a new school year.
The first is a book my kindergartners make in September. It is shaped like an apple and each page contains part of an apple poem. On each page, the students must draw a picture to match a certain part of the poem. The words are shaped and sized so that even non-readers can figure out what each page says. For example, the word big is written in large letters and the word round is written in a round shape. This is a good confidence booster for beginning readers and my brand new kindergartners love taking this home to "read" to their families.
The book reads:
Apple with a worm in the middle
All are picked in the fall
This is also a fun poem to memorize and recite for Johnny Appleseed Day.
When finished, the book is tied together with a ribbon. This is a fun keepsake to send home to remember the beginning of the school year.
The second a project that is perfect to display on Back to School Night. Each student creates a paper version of themselves, dresses it in their style, and writes clues to their identity. At Back to School Night, the parents try to guess which paper student belongs to them.
After creating their paper selves, students can pick from the following to dress themselves: short sleeve shirt, long sleeve shirt, leggings, jeans, tank top, skirt, boots, shoes, sunglasses, hair bows, bow ties, and shorts.
The final craft is a great way for new classmates to get to know each other. It is a rainbow with a cloud and pot of gold. The cloud reads "A Rainbow of Me!" and the child will write his/her name on the pot of gold.
For each color of the rainbow, the child uses a color that represents their likes and characteristics. The rainbow reads:
"My Favorite Color"
"The Color of my Favorite Food"
"My Hair Color"
"My Favorite Sport Team's Colors"
"The Color of my Shirt"
"My Eye Color"
and "The Color of my Bedroom"
All templates and step-by-step directions (with pictures) are included for each craft. Please message me if you have any questions. Enjoy!
